A young aspiring artist has overcome her learning difficulties and social anxiety to showcase her artwork at a prestigious exhibition in Weybridge.

Lauren Asad, 16, has anxiety and selective mutism due to her autism.

However, that hasn’t stopped the teenager from pursuing her dreams of becoming an artist.

In October 2017, she exhibited two pieces at the Royal College of Art in London, which were both sold.

More recently in November 2017, Lauren’s painting was exhibited at the Whitewall Gallery in Weybridge and presented to her idol Fabian Perez, who commissioned the piece.

Perez is a Los Angeles-based artist who was selected to paint for the 2012 Summer Olympics and has painted important figures such as Pope Francis.

Lauren, from Hertfordshire, said meeting her idol and having her work exhibited next to his was a memory she would never forget.

“When you dream one day that you’d see your work up on the wall of a prestigious art gallery next to your all time international hero, there’s no words to describe what’s going through your head,” she said.

She continued: “When it was hard to keep finding the strength to carry on, this painting was there reminding me why I’m picking myself up and not giving up.

“Now I’ve already achieved some of my lifetime ambitions and made memories I’ll never forget and I haven’t even started my journey as a full-time artist yet.”

Lauren’s mother, Jacqui Asad, said Fabian encouraged her daughter to be true to herself.

“We have worked hard to help Lauren see she doesn’t have to live up to anyone else’s expectations,” she said.

“Not being able to talk when anxious shouldn’t stop her achieving her dreams nor should it make her feel second best.”

She added: “Fabian said something lovely to her when they last met about Lauren being herself.

“If she couldn’t speak when exhibiting in the future people would just find it an intriguing part of her as an artist.

“It was lovely to hear someone tell her it’s ok she doesn’t need to strive to be like anyone else.”
