Woking shoppers invited to experience ‘virtual reality art’ at Peacocks Centre

January 12, 2018

The Lightbox museum in Woking is inviting virtual visitors to its Turner exhibition for a limited time only.

On Saturday (January 13), the museum will be setting up a stand in the Peacocks Centre where shoppers will be able to try on virtual reality headsets and immerse themselves in a 360° video of the gallery.

The VR experience will give visitors a taste of the museum’s Turner in Surrey exhibition, which includes work from JMW Turner’s period living in the county.

They will then have the opportunity to visit the exhibition in person at a discounted rate, with a two-for-one day pass voucher valid until February 11.

The Turner in Surrey exhibition, which runs until March 4, features both preliminary sketches and finished works from Turner’s time in Surrey.

The paintings on display include ‘Newark Abbey on the Wey’ and ‘Thompson’s Aolian Harp’, a painting of the Thames viewed from Richmond Hill.

The Royal Academy of Arts has also loaned some of Turner’s personal possessions to The Lightbox for the exhibition.

If you want to experience Turner’s work in virtual reality, the team from The Lightbox will be on the Town Mall level of the Peacocks Centre from 9.30am until 6pm on Saturday (January 13).
