Woking FC in need of goals and points after FA Cup defeat

Skipper Mark Ricketts has urged Woking to leave their FA Cup misery behind – and re-focus on this weekend’s Skrill Premier clash against Grimsby Town.

Speaking after Saturday’s 1-0 fourth qualifying round defeat to Luton Town, the midfielder insisted: “You have to keep going into every game being positive and we have to put that game behind us now and move on to next week.

“We need to start moving up the table and getting some points.”

The latest blank means toothless Cards have now gone more than seven hours without a goal – their last coming in the third minute at Southport on October 5.

And after crashing out of the FA Cup in the qualifying stages for the third successive season, Ricketts admitted: “It’s a horrible feeling and we must try to move on as quickly as we can.

“We fancied our chances [against Luton] and gave it everything but it wasn’t quite enough.

“We’re not really creating clear-cut chances or doing enough around the box. You can’t really fault the effort but it’s not enough.”

A key moment for the hosts came when Giuseppe Sole – recalled in place of unavailable Luton loan striker Scott Rendell – blazed a 28th-minute shot high and wide when clean through on goal.

Manager Garry Hill complained: “You have to take opportunities when they come along and that was a big, costly miss.”

Sole has played a bit-part role this season since coming back after nearly a year out with a knee injury and is clearly ring-rusty.

But Hill insisted: “You expect whatever forward you have in that position to do better than he did. It would have been the cushion we needed.”

Mark Cullen’s header from a Dave Martin corner five minutes later ultimately won the tie for a Hatters side showing six changes from their league line-up against Tamworth the previous week.
