West Byfleet death: Police formally identify man found in Woodham Lock

The man whose body was found in Woodham Lock has been formally identified by police as 34-year-old Asif Ali Nawaz from Woking .

The body of Mr Nawaz, of Lockwood Path, was discovered by a passer-by in the Basingstoke Canal at West Byfleet at around 9am on Saturday (July 15).

Surrey Police launched an investigation into his death and a cordon was set up at the lock, remaining in place until Monday afternoon (July 17).

Initially police said the death was being treated as “suspicious”.

A spokesman said on Tuesday (July 18): “Officers are still keeping an open mind into the circumstances that led to him being in the lock.

“The results of the post-mortem have come back but we are unable to release the details of such at this time for operational reasons.”

Police released CCTV images of six people believed to have been in the area at the time, stressing that they were not under suspicion of any wrong doing.

Following the death a resident in the area has spoken of their “torment” for not calling police after hearing a commotion in the lock area in the early hours of Saturday.
