West Byfleet death: Floral tributes paid to ‘Sweetest Asif’ as investigations continue into ‘suspicious’ Woodham Lock body find

Floral tributes to “Sweetest Asif” have been left at Woodham Lock after a man’s body was discovered in the Basingstoke Canal at West Byfleet .

The lock has been sealed off since the early hours of Saturday morning (July 15) as Surrey Police continues to investigate the man’s death.

The man has not been formally identified yet but officers believe they know who he is and have informed his family.

On Monday (July 17), floral tributes were left at the scene, with one reading: “Sweetest Asif. May you rest in peace.”

Residents living along the canal in the West Byfleet area have spoken as one in paying tribute to the person who sadly lost their life.

One resident said: “It’s so sad to hear what has happened – you can’t even begin to imagine what the family is going through at the moment.”

Another resident said: “It was completely out of the blue really. I went outside to see a lot of emergency services all along one road so it must have been serious.

“It is just so sad to hear what has happened, my thoughts are with those affected.”

Over the weekend, Surrey Police issued a number of CCTV images of people they wished to speak to in connection with the discovery.

None of them are under suspicion, and the force on Monday confirmed three out of the six people captured on camera near the scene had now been identified.

Get Surrey was told Woodham Lock will remain closed for at least another two days, although Surrey Police has suggested it could reopen by Tuesday morning.

Police have asked people to avoid the area and advised anyone who uses the lock regularly to seek alternative routes for the foreseeable future.
