Warning of instant ban for M25 drivers speeding at more than 90mph proved false

A viral tweet that claimed drivers would start receiving instant bans for speeding at more than 90mph on the M25 and M1 is untrue.

Frank Sinclair, the former Chelsea footballer who once lived in Weybridge, posted the original tweet – retweeted almost 4,000 times – claiming an “autoticket generating system with six point penalty” was going to be introduced at midnight on Tuesday (January 8).

However, Highways England has since revealed that the tweet is inaccurate, with others claiming the hoax has been going round in various forms since as early as 2016, reports My London.

The original tweet said: “All cameras on M1 and M25 go live at midnight tonight, set at 72mph. Auto ticket generating system with six point penalty.

“Watch your speed and tell everyone else tonight, any speed over 90mph is instant ban possible court custodial sentence order!! Drive safely guys girls.”

Highways England, though, have been quick to reassure motorists that this is not the case. From their official account, a spokesman said: “I can confirm that the content of that tweet (which appears to be doing the rounds on social media) is not correct. Safe travels.”

Many Twitter users were unconvinced at Sinclair’s tweet, insisting it was impossible to get six points for “exceeding the speed limit by less than 5%”.

The tweet appears to have now been deleted from his account.

One particular driver had a very good reason to be unconcerned. He said: “My van won’t do 70mph if I pushed it off a cliff so I’m well safe.”
