The walk-in centre is not returning to the Weybridge hospital site in the immediate future, the NHS has confirmed.

The Weybridge community was left in shock after the town’s historic hospital site was left in ruins following a devastating fire last July.

In the aftermath of the catastrophic blaze, a petition set up to rebuild the walk-in centre on the site attracted more than 3,000 signatures from concerned residents.

While other services, including GP practices and treatment rooms, returned to the hospital site last December, the future of the walk-in centre was left uncertain.

However, the North West Surrey Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has now confirmed the walk-in centre is not returning to the site anytime soon.

In a statement on its website, it said: “It has not been possible to provide the facilities required for a walk-in centre to operate fully.

“The nearest alternative urgent care centre is a few miles away from Weybridge at St. Peter’s Hospital (next to the AE department).

“We appreciate this is not preferable for people who used and valued the previous walk-in centre in Weybridge.”

It added that a temporary walk-in centre for Weybridge was not possible either.

“A walk-in centre requires certain infrastructure that cannot be provided in temporary buildings e.g. X-ray facilities,” the statement read.

“There were also restrictions on space that meant it would not be possible to accommodate all elements of a walk-in centre.

“Finally, there was a need to prioritise those services used most regularly by the local community, these being the GP services and community clinics.”

Despite this, the CCG also said that a public consultation will be held later this year to consider how urgent care can be best provided across north Surrey.

“We plan to hold a public consultation on where urgent treatment centres would be best located across North West Surrey to meet the urgent and emergency health needs of our patients,” it said.

“We are aiming to start this consultation in September, to run for a 12-week period through to December 2018.”

The CCG added the future rebuild will be financed by NHS Property Services and that it is committed to providing a ‘right mix of local health services’ despite funding pressures on the NHS.
