University fireworks display cancelled due to fire strike

Organisers of the University of Surrey’s fireworks display have cancelled the event scheduled for Friday night, as a result of the planned Fire Brigades Union industrial action.

The union said members would be walking out of work on November 1 between 6.30pm and 11pm, just as fireworks and bonfire events are taking place in Guildford and elsewhere around the county.

A university spokesman confirmed on Thursday (October 31) that the display would not go ahead due to health and safety risks.

He said: “The University of Surrey has taken the decision to cancel the fireworks display which was due to take place on Friday November 1, as a result of the Fire Brigades Union strike happening at the same time.

“We have sought the guidance of both health and safety, and insurance advisors, and have concluded that it would not be prudent to continue with the display with the strike scheduled to take place at exactly the same time.

“We appreciate that this is very disappointing but the safety of our people and property is paramount and we cannot afford to take unnecessary risks.”

FBU members are also set to take part in a strike on Monday (November 4) between 6am and 8am, as part of a row over changes in pensions and retirement age.

Firefighters previously staged industrial action on September 25 but cancelled a second planned strike on October 19.
