Underpass ceiling collapses at Leatherhead train station after ‘worry’ over platform

August 12, 2018

The subway at Leatherhead train station has suffered a collapsed ceiling, just two weeks after concerns a platform was about to give way.

It occurred on Thursday (August 9) and Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) have said they are currently awaiting repairs.

A GTR spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that the ceiling has collapsed and the subway has been closed since Thursday. We are currently waiting for repairs to be done.

“The issue doesn’t affect the running of the station and people can still enter/exit. Customers who need to change platforms will need to walk down the road underneath the bridge to get to the other side of the station.

“Station staff are aware and have been assisting customers. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience.”

One passenger, Katharine Arthur said: “The underpass is closed, I am told because the ceiling has collapsed. I see no sign of urgent repairs.”

This incident follows a situation where one of the platforms seemed to have collapsed at the same station less than two weeks ago.
