A group of up to 50 caravans has left Shalford Park just one day after the eviction of another group less than one and-a-half miles down the road.

The unauthorised encampment pitched up in the park on Monday evening (July 9) after a court order was served to a group in Shalford Common.

A Guildford Borough Council (GBC) spokesman confirmed the numerous caravans and other vehicles, including quad bikes, are no longer parked at the park.

It was previously stated that it will do “all it can” to address the second encampment following numerous reports of antisocial behaviour from the previous site.

It was previously confirmed that an unauthorised encampment arrived at Shalford Park on Monday evening following the eviction of a group at Shalford Common – 1.2 miles down the road.

Just one day after council workers cleared up the site from the previous encampment , a GBC spokesman said on Wednesday morning (July 11) that the second group left Shalford Park.

According to Councillor Matt Furniss, the group of up to 50 caravans arrived at the park after “breaking into the site”.

While GBC has not confirmed the two groups are the same, Cllr Furniss stated on Facebook on Tuesday: “The majority of the travellers have overnight moved onto Shalford Park by breaking into the site.

“The countryside wardens have carried out a welfare check. There are around 50 caravans on site plus associated vehicles.

“The police have agreed to use their powers to move the travellers from Shalford Park with the support of the bailiffs we have engaged.”

He added that the group has been issued a notice to leave the site.

GBC leader Paul Spooner previously stated on social media that the group “has now broken into Shalford Park” and the council is “looking at the strongest action possible given the situation”.

The group at Shalford Common caused a stir with the locals as multiple incidents were reported to the police, including a pub disturbance and antisocial behaviour.

“We received a number of calls over the weekend in relation to an illegal encampment in Shalford,” a spokesman told Surrey Live .

“The incidents included reports of antisocial driving, antisocial behaviour and criminal damage.

“We have been monitoring the situation and carrying out extra patrols in the area.”

Guildford MP Anne Milton stated she will be flagging up locals’ concerns about the illegal encampments.

She said: “Many local people have been in touch with me as they are concerned about the recent influx of travellers at Shalford.

“Whilst this matter is the responsibility of GBC to deal with, I am also taking this up with the relevant people at the highest levels – both locally and nationally.”
