A UKIP candidate standing in an upcoming by-election says he received threatening phone calls and verbal abuse while on the campaign trail.

Nicholas Wood is running in Thursday’s (July 12) Oxshott and Stoke D’Abernon by-election in Elmbridge, which was called after Conservative councillor James Vickers resigned from the role.

The resignation means there is a vacant councillor position in the ward, which is being contested by David Lewis for the Tories, Dorothy Ford for the Liberal Democrats and Nicholas Wood for UKIP.

However, Mr Wood has said he has experienced aggressive behaviour as well as threatening phone calls while campaigning.

“I have suffered anonymous threats on my mobile phone saying, ‘Don’t come on the Danes estate again’, ‘You don’t realise what situation you are in’ and ‘I cannot guarantee your safety’.

“One individual also shouted aggressive abuse at my face, then later from across the street.”

Mr Wood said he did not encounter such behaviour while campaigning during the local elections in May.

He has now called on other political parties to condemn threats and bullying behaviour.

“I am sure that all political parties contesting this election will speak as one voice in condemning threats, bullying, or intimidation in our precious political process,” he said.

Surrey Police has confirmed it is not investigating the matter.

“We received reports on Saturday (June 28) of an incident whereby a man had been verbally abused outside an address in Cobham ,” a police spokesman said.
