Tried and tested: Marks and Spencer’s £20 Valentine’s Day meal deal

Especially for Valentine’s Day , Marks and Spencer has launched a special meal deal for loved ones to share.

Featuring a starter, main, side, dessert, chocolates AND a bottle of Prosecco all for £20, it sounds pretty good value.

In fact, customers can save up to £19.30.

But is it actually any good?

We decided to give the supermarket deal a go.

Tried and tested: By Laura Nightingale

Before I went into the shop I had a quick look online to see what items were included in the meal deal and made a mental list of which ones I wanted.

Thankfully everything on my list was available including the lamb shanks which my partner was adamant about getting.

The price seemed too good to be true what with a bottle of fizz being thrown in as well, but nevertheless the proof was in the pudding – and we chose profiteroles for that.

The lamb shanks took 45 minutes to cook so once home, I popped them in the oven in it’s foil packaging (already in my good books for no washing up).

There were two portions in the pack, one for each of us, and it came in a red wine, mint and lentil jus with honey-roasted root vegetables.

Because we were having three courses with a side of fresh asparagus, we didn’t need to cook extra potatoes to go with it.

While the meat was cooking we ate the soft poached eggs, again one for each of us.

Rolled in a crisp golden crumb, the large Scotch eggs were stuffed with a wonderful seasoned sausage meat and it gave me flashbacks of picnics in the summer.

But it was vibrant runny yolk that was the most impressive part – perfect.

Now on to the main course.

Once cooked, the red meat simply fell off the bone just as it should.

It was not fatty, instead the lamb was juicy, tasty and the boozy sauce went perfectly well, as did the dainty veggies.

There must have been at least 10 profiteroles in the pack for us to share for dessert which I thought was generous and they tasted as good as they looked.

In classic style, the delicate choux pastries were filled with fresh cream and topped with a rich, thick chocolate sauce.

One word – dreamy,

We had no complaints regarding the pack of chocolate hearts and bottle of fizz – which both went down a treat later in the evening in front of the TV.

Yum!

Verdict:

The meal deal was excellent value for money and as expected the MS quality impressed us.

For meat-eaters, there was a fantastic selection of dishes to choose from, for vegetarians not so much and for vegans not at all.

And for that reason I had to knock a point off, making my meal deal rating 4/5.

The £20 Valentine’s Day meal deal is available in stores and online from February 12-16.
