A popular homeless man who had become well-known while living on the streets of Guildford has died.

Tributes and flowers have been left to create a shrine near Guildford bus station in memory of the man, known as Lenny. It includes cards and messages, one of which describes him as “kind, funny, clever and a good friend”.

It is yet to be confirmed how the man died, but it has come as a shock to the homeless community and local residents who knew him.

Jason Burton, another homeless man in Guildford, described Lenny as an “extremely intelligent and a good man”.

He added: “He was trying to get sorted out but he was struggling.

“We are not having a great time and have to take every day as it comes. It is a shame and terrible because I was with Lenny all week. He was quite funny, too.

“Lenny was homeless in the area for three or four years. He was in and out of properties like we all are. People get the wrong impression; just because you see us out here does not mean we can’t read or write.

“It is just a shame. We want Guildford to know he was an extremely intelligent and good man.”

Steve Murray is another of the town’s homeless community who was close to Lenny.

He said: “He was showing signs of struggle for a couple of weeks. He put on a brave face as he did not like showing his emotions. He was a nice guy and was always nice to us.”
