Surrey cricket fans and players were evacuated from the Oval on Thursday (August 31) as armed police arrived at the ground when a projectile was fired onto the pitch.

Spectators were told to “go indoors” during the Surrey vs Middlesex match after what was believed to be an arrow or crossbow bolt was fired shortly before 4.35pm.

An announcement was heard across the ground which said: “A projectile has been fired into the field of play… The advice from our chief executive and from security and the police is that everybody should go indoors.”

Police said that there had been no reported injuries and that officers had “an open mind as to motive”.

Duncan Chapman, who was at the ground when the incident happened, told Get Surrey: “Everyone safe. Police and Surrey officials quick to advise people to move inside. No panic. Most, including me, now drifting away from ground.”

Surrey committee member Colin Hunt was also evacuated from the game.

He told Get Surrey : “I was sitting in the members’ pavilion, the lower side of it, and I looked across and I saw a bolt hitting the second wicket, the spare wicket, from the far end of the OCS stand.

“I don’t know if it was from the ground or the outside.”

He added: “This is ludicrous, I don’t know what the motive was, this is crazy.

“What were they trying to achieve? It’s senseless.”
