The new sex disease which is confused with chlamydia could be ‘next superbug’

A new sexually transmitted disease could make thousands of women infertile and has been dubbed the “next superbug”, experts have warned.

According to the Mirror Online , NHS services are misdiagnosing mycoplasma genitalium (MG) due to a lack of testing kits.

The MG infection affects 1 in 100 people and could cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) which causes infertility.

The British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) has issued new NICE-approved guidelines today to prevent an explosion of infection rates within five to 10 years.

Experts say the lack of test kits – which cost just £4 – means MG is regularly confused with chlamydia.

The misdiagnosis could mean it is treated with incorrect doses of antibiotics which could build up dangerous antibiotic resistance making MG untreatable.

Paddy Horner, spokesman for the BASHH, said: “We can’t afford to continue with the approach we have followed for the past 15 years as this will undoubtedly lead to a public health emergency with the emergence of MG as a superbug.

“We are asking the government directly to make this funding available to prevent a public health emergency waiting to happen and which is already spiralling out of control.”

Data obtained under the Freed of Information Act shows only 10% of local commissioners are buying the vital test kits needed to fight the sexually transmitted infection (STI) at the moment.

The new national guidelines are for women with symptoms of MG to be given the test and treated with correct medication.

Dr Peter Greenhouse, sexual consultant in Bristol and BASHH member said: “It’s about time the public learned about mycoplasma genitalium.

“Without the funds to diagnose MG properly, or the ability for people to get to clinics for checkups, we’ll never get on top of this infection.”
