Take on Prudential RideLondon, London Marathon and Swim Serpentine in ultimate sporting challenge

Forget Ironman, there is a new challenge looming for anyone who is brave enough to take it on.

The London Marathon events team has launched the London Classics which requires participants to run the Virgin Money London Marathon, swim two miles at the open water swimming festival Swim Serpentine and cycle the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 .

You don’t have to do all of the events in one year, as anyone who has completed the London Marathon since 1981 or cycled the RideLondon-Surrey 100 since it launched in 2013 can enter.

The first chance to claim a London Classics medal will be this year at the Swim Serpentine event on September 16 with the introduction of a two mile swim.

Those completing the trio of challenges will swim into the London Classics Hall of Fame and receive a medal engraved with the words ‘Et ego Londinium vici’ which translates to ‘I too have conquered London’.

London Marathon events director, Hugh Brasher, said: “We have brought together the best marathon in the world, the world’s greatest cycling festival and our inspirational open water swimming event, Swim Serpentine, to create the London Classics.

“This will become one of the world’s great sporting challenges.

“Over the years, the London Marathon has inspired hundreds of thousands to take up running and we hope the London Classics will inspire tens of thousands to try a new sport.

“If you have already completed the London Marathon and the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100, you can enter this September’s two mile London Classics wave at Swim Serpentine and your name will become part of sporting history.”

Double Olympic gold medalist, rower Heather Stanning OBE says she is hoping to be one of the first to complete the London Classics.

She said: “It is a fantastic opportunity to be one of the first to complete this unique sporting triple.

“It is such a great idea from the London Marathon Events team and a challenge I’m sure lots of people will want to take on.”

The athlete completed the London Marathon this year and takes on the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 on July 30.

The events can be completed in any order and there is no time limit on when they need to be done.
