Surrey is poised for more wet and windy weather on Friday (December 7) as “Storm Deirdre” sweeps across the country.

A yellow weather warning for very strong winds has been issued by the Met Office as the storm arrives in the UK from the Atlantic Ocean.

The warning covers parts of Northern Ireland, northern England, Scotland and Wales.

While Surrey is not included in the warning, areas such as Guildford, Woking and Reigate are still likely to see some pretty dismal weather.

The Met Office forecast for Surrey says: “Heavy rain clearing, then windy with occasional showers on Friday.

“Breezy but drier, brighter on Saturday (December 8), coastal gales and showery rain later. Winds easing and showers clearing on Sunday (December 9).”

Gale force winds and torrential downpours are likely to cause flooding and transport disruption in the other affected areas.

Fresh to strong westerly winds are forecast in the UK and Ireland on Friday, reaching gale force along western and southern coasts, as well as north-western coasts of continental Europe.

It will then track across Scotland on Friday night, and on to southern Norway, Denmark and southern Sweden through Saturday.

A spokesperson for The Weather Channel said: “Based on the current forecast, it is possible that this storm will be named by the UK Met Office and Irish Met Éireann as Storm Deirdre, with high winds and surface flooding possible.

“An official yellow weather warning has already been issued for high winds affecting large areas of northern England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

It states: “A weather system will move eastwards across the UK on Friday bringing widespread gales.

“Inland gusts of 60-70mph are possible with gusts of 80 mph in exposed locations in Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England. There remains some uncertainty in the track of this system and where the strongest winds will occur.

“Heavy rainfall may be an additional hazard across parts of northern and western Scotland.”
