A crew from Salfords Fire Station was called to the scene but recalled before reaching the airport.

A firefighter at the station said: “We were called to an aircraft in distress at the airport. The brief says there was smoke coming from the left engine but it’s taxiing fine.”

The British Airways spokesman said: “Our flight landed normally. Ground services attended purely as a precaution, in line with normal procedure. The aircraft will be thoroughly inspected by our expert engineers as there was a report of a possible technical fault.

Gatwick Airport has been approached for comment.
