Plans to open a micropub in a Surrey village have been approved despite concerns from locals that it’s too small.

A petition signed by 49 people and 10 letters of objections were submitted over the application for Tubbs Pubb in Send, Woking.

Residents were concerned that the 52.4 sq m pub was too small for the amount of customers, which would cause them to spill out onto the street.

They were also fears the micropub could contribute to noise and littering in the area.

Despite these concerns, the plans were approved at a Guildford Borough Council (GBC) planning committee meeting on Wednesday evening (January 9).

Speaking at the meeting, Send councillor Susan Parker objected to the application and said it could lead to further drinking in a nearby recreation ground.

“There’s grave concerns which have been raised by residents about this encouraging of drinking in the adjacent recreation ground,” she said.

“That’s a very serious problem. It’s going to be exasperated by a micropub such as this.”

However, other councillors present at the meeting were in favour of the new micropub.

Holy Trinity councillor Nils Christiansen said: “When pubs are opened people always complain but then again the Victorians were wise enough to open many of them and now we try and stop people closing them.

“I hope this one turns into a successful pub as well.”

Council leader Paul Spooner added: “All these issues in relation to opening hours and drinking will be addressed in the licensing application.”

‘All forms of electronics are frowned upon’

Tim Tubb previously defended his bid to open the micropub in Send Road, arguing it will be a more “intimate place” than a traditional pub because “all forms of electronics are frowned upon”.

As a result, there will be no fruit machines, juke boxes or TVs in the pub.

In a letter to planning officers at GBC, submitted as part of the application, he wrote: “Instead there will be tables, chairs and space for sitting and thinking, reading the paper if you want to and conversation.

“Above all, conversation with anybody and everybody about everything and anything.”

There will be a maximum capacity of 20 customers and people will also be able to collect take out ale.
