Person dies at Purley station following ‘medical incident’ on train to Caterham

A person has died at Purley railway station following a “medical incident” on board a train to Caterham.

British Transport Police confirmed that it was called to the station shortly after midday on Tuesday (February 12), and that a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are now working to identify the person and inform their next of kin.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Southern Rail says via its website that platform six at the station is currently blocked due to the train being at a stand.

It adds that the incident took place on board the 11.14am London Bridge to Caterham service.

Disruption, including cancellations and delayed trains, is expected at Purley station until 2pm.

Congestion is expected in the area as services await an available platform, with platform alterations also anticipated.
