People are struggling to get to work after a “lifeline” bus service stopped operating suddenly, councillors have warned.

The sudden collapse of services provided by Buses Excetera on Monday (March 11) has left residents trying to get to work or hospital appointments, councillors said this week.

Surrey County Council has been rallying around to try and replace as many routes as it can, but was struggling to fund a company to replace the 479 service linking Guildford and Epsom via Leatherhead , a meeting was told.

Cllr Tim Hall, chairman of SCC and Mole Valley District Council Local Committee, said on Wednesday (March 13) there were still discussions going on behind the scenes and transport officers were doing all they could to find an alternative company to help.

Buses Excetera operates six bus routes and two other routes through the district.

The company unexpectedly ceased trading on Monday. Four other bus companies have stepped in.

Cllr Hall said: “There are still ongoing conversations for the 479 which is an important transport link. As a commercial bus company there is no contract and that’s what is the problem.

“It’s a serious issue. It’s a school route, a route to Epsom Hospital . A list of a large number of users for all sort of reasons.

“A lot of work is going on behind the scenes to replace it.”

Cllr Chris Townsend said he had received many emails and phone calls from residents worried about the service stopping and that some people were struggling to get to work.

He said: “It’s a lifeline. There is deep concern about what has happened and the sooner we get a service through that route the better.”
