Oxted Inn Wetherspoons not showing England’s World Cup semi-final due to ‘health and safety issues’

The Oxted Inn will not be showing England’s World Cup semi-final match against Croatia due to “health and safety issues”.

The Wetherspoon’s pub, by Oxted station, did show England’s quarter-final match on Saturday (July 7), but bad behaviour by some patrons forced a rethink.

A member of staff said: “It’s just due to recent events and health and safety issues.

“The pub is a very small premises so having the number of people we’ve had, and there have been some incidents, so we won’t be showing the football.”

They added that the pub had been unable to hire door staff at such short notice to keep rowdy fans under control.

England’s victory over Sweden, their first quarter final win since 1990, prompted riotous scenes across the country.

In London, celebrating fans damaged an ambulance response car and caused havoc in the Stratford branch of Ikea, while in Nottingham a taxi driver told Nottinghamshire Live his life had been “ruined” after fans trashed his taxi.

The semi-final on Wednesday night (July 11) will be shown elsewhere, though, so check with your local if you’re making plans.
