A development proposal for the Oxted gas holder site has been increased from 77 flats to 111 after the developer agreed to purchase the adjacent car park.

St William has filed an application for 111 flats to be built on the site, in Nursery Way off Station Road East, after it agreed to buy Johnsdale car park from the council.

The original application for 77 flats was approved by Tandridge District Counci l on January 11 after a lengthy debate and an attempt for it to be dismissed.

If the new application is accepted, 20 one-bed, 70 two-bed and 21 three-bed apartments with 147 car parking spaces and 134 cycle spaces will be built.

The flats will be spread across three buildings of three to seven storeys.

Andrew Lockheart, who lives in Johnsdale, commented on the application and said: “The size of the block of flats is much too big and not at all in keeping with the scale of the surrounding properties.

“It will dominate Oxted. The flats will be extremely detrimental to us as our house and garden will be overlooked by several flats.”

The huge 1960s gas holder has not been used for more than 15 years.

Elisabeth Cross also commented on the application and said: “While many people want the site to be redeveloped, the council needs to show courage and integrity in refusing this oversized, intrusive and unnecessary plan.

“Having waited so long, local residents deserve better.”

The application has a target decision date of June 28 and if all goes well for the developer, construction could begin in autumn of this year.

Louise Round, chief executive of TDC, said: “We would like to encourage residents to take a look at the new planning application for the gas holder and Johnsdale car park sites.

“Removing the gas holder from the town centre will greatly improve the appearance and vitality of Oxted. Its removal has been a long-held objective of the council and is one we are keen to deliver for the town.”
