An oil spillage has continued to partially shut the A3 southbound at the Hindhead Tunnel following an earlier lorry fire .

Two crews from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) attended a lorry on fire just after the tunnel’s southbound exit on Tuesday afternoon (February 12).

Travel news service INRIX has reported that 25 litres of oil is on the carriageway as a result of the incident, and that an “area team” is on scene treating the spillage.

Motorists have been stuck in heavy traffic on the southbound carriageway, with congestion stretching as far back as Milford .

One lane of traffic was released at 6.10pm, although lane one of the southbound carriageway has remained closed to treat the spillage.

The northbound carriageway was closed for a period of time whilst fire crews attended the fire, but reopened at around 5.20pm.

One eyewitness to the lorry fire travelled through the tunnel whilst it was filling with “thick black smoke”.

Dean Phillips said: “I must have been the last car to drive through the tunnel. The lorry was parked up in a layby on the southbound side just outside the tunnel.

“By the time I got halfway through the tunnel there was thick black smoke. I thought i was going to have to get out of my van and go to one of the safety exits.

“I had to slow down to 20mph as the visibility was no more than 15 or 20 yards. I looked back once I got out and all I could see was clouds of black smoke.”

Another member of the public, who was stuck in stationary traffic on the A3 southbound, was stuck for almost an hour.

Teacher Kate Forster said she had taken to doing marking work whilst sat in the queue, and reported that there were “lots of people out of their cars” as a result of the closure.

A spokesman for SFRS confirmed that the two fire crews in attendance at the lorry fire were from Haslemere fire station – they left the scene at around 5.30pm.

Recovery has now also been organised for the lorry that was on fire.
