A MOTHER and her young daughter were approached in Epsom by a man who appeared to have been following them in his car.

Police were called following the suspicious incident in Headley Close at around 12.30pm on Saturday (April 27).

The woman, in her 30s, and her four-year-old daughter were heading towards Ewell when it happened.

They had crossed Hartford Close and Collier Close when police said the mother became aware of a small, three-door silver car being driven by a man.

As they approached Chessington Road, he got out and approached them before returning to the vehicle when the woman asked if he was alright.

Detective Constable Andy Cooper from East Surrey CID said: “I would appeal to the man involved to make contact with officers as we need to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding this incident.

“At this stage in the investigation the motive behind the car following the two people is unclear and it may simply be a case of mistaken identity, but I would appeal to anyone who has any information on this incident to contact Surrey Police.”

Officers have carried out a number of enquiries locally since the incident but anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting reference EP/13/1720.

The man was described as white, aged in his late 20s to early 30s, around 5ft 8in tall and of slim build with mousey brown hair.
