Man dies after being hit by bin lorry near Hamsey Green

A man has died after being hit by a bin lorry near Hamsey Green.

The pedestrian, who was in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene following the collision in Cherry Tree Green in Sanderstead, just over the Surrey/Croydon border and only a 10-minute walk from Warlingham School, at about 11am on Wednesday (July 11).

The Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service (LAS) attended but were unable to save the man’s life despite “extensive efforts”.

A police cordon and a white forensics tent were in place for several hours after the tragedy and a coroner’s ambulance arrived at around 1.30pm to remove the body.

Cherry Tree Green and part of Limpsfield Road were cordoned off by emergency services.

A spokeswoman for LAS said: “We were called at 10.46am today (July 11) to Cherry Tree Green, South Croydon, to reports of a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian.

“We sent an incident response officer, two single responders in cars and an ambulance crew to the scene. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance by helicopter. Sadly despite extensive efforts, they died at the scene.”

The man’s next of kin has been informed however formal identification has not yet taken place.

Veolia, which runs Croydon Council’s waste and recycling service, said in a statement: “We can confirm that one of our collection vehicles was involved in a serious incident in the Sanderstead area of Croydon at 10.50am today (July 11) in which tragically a man has died.

“Our deepest sympathy is with the family of the deceased and while we are unable to comment further on the circumstances at present, we are working closely with the emergency services and a full investigation into the incident is underway.”
