A helicopter was also present as well as a number of both marked and unmarked cars.

A resident of St John’s Road, who asked not to be named, said: “When I arrived [home] there were five unmarked cars and six to ten non-uniform officers, all in [stab] vests. [There were also] about ten in uniform. There were three in the garden, three doors up from my garden.

“They were in the front garden with shields and rifles. There was a police dog – an Alsatian – and there were two or three additional armed officers.

“They were waiting for a long time. There was an old guy in cuffs when I arrived about an hour and a half ago.

“After about 40 minutes, six or seven armed police went into the house, stacked up behind the shields. They went in down the alleyway and then I couldn’t see them anymore.”

The witness added: “So then they brought out a middle aged man in handcuffs and handed him over to the non-uniformed officers.

“Then they went back in with a yellow battering ram and then they brought out a lady who I didn’t recognise. And then after a little while they all came out. The dog went and searched all the gardens.”

A battering ram and crowbar were brandished by police but were not used although a police dog did help officers search the address.

Teresa Ward, who lives on St John’s Road, and was speaking shortly after the police arrived said: “There appears to be some sort of stand-off. A car has been surrounded for over an hour and a helicopter is still here.

“There are a number of policeman, one of them has a proper gun and others have helmets and shields.”

She added: “The police seem to have it under control, I’m not too worried but it’s not right in front of my house. It would be a different story if it was right in front of my house.”
