An Indian restaurant in Chertsey has had its food hygiene rating reduced to zero after an inspection by the council.

Environmental health officers from Runnymede Borough Council (RBC) surprised staff at Indos Fine Dining in Pycroft Road with an unannounced inspection.

According to a post on the council’s Facebook page, inspectors found dirty chopping boards and dirty kitchen and food storage areas.

Inspectors also found “poor standards of cleanliness on kitchen equipment”, all of which contributed to the restaurant having its food hygiene rating reduced to zero.

This rating means that “urgent improvement is required” according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

The rating for the restaurant has not been updated on the FSA website, where it is still listed as being two, but there is a note stating the restaurant had been “recently inspected” and a new rating would be published soon.

Surrey Live contacted INDOS Fine Dining for comment but managers at the restaurant did not respond.

In the Facebook post, something which was clearly inspired by the ongoing World Cup, the council announced: “Runnymede has shown a red card to a lack of food hygiene at a Chertsey restaurant.

“The business operator wasn’t present when we called but due to a number of serious issues including the poor standards of cleanliness on kitchen equipment he saw yellow, as he was cautioned over the phone for food safety offences.”

It continued: “The visit has resulted in a serious own goal for the restaurant as its level 2 food hygiene scheme rating (some improvement necessary) has been reduced to a zero – urgent improvement is required – the only zero in Runnymede.

“If you’re looking for a post or pre-match bite to eat during the World Cup it’s worth looking for the sticker or go online to the Food Standards Agency website to see all the ratings. Take the time to consider somewhere that’s a high scorer.”
