The remnants of monster Hurricane Michael could bring gale-force winds to the UK if the storm makes its way across the Atlantic over the weekend.

The hurricane, which has wreaked havoc in Florida and is currently moving through Georgia and South Carolina in the United States, could cause problems for us next week.

Michael slammed into the south coast of the US as a Category 4 hurricane with winds measuring 155mph, before weakening into a tropical storm on Thursday (October 11).

Forecasters are predicting the storm will move out of the US into the Atlantic on Friday (October 12), forming an extra-tropical storm system, before moving eastwards towards Europe over the weekend.

It could combine with a separate area of low pressure bringing more unsettled weather across the UK as early as Monday (October 15) next week.

Forecaster Amy Hodgson, of The Weather Channel , said forecast models are predicting Michael will merge with another area of low pressure before reaching Europe.

“Latest model guidance indicates an eastward movement across the North Atlantic, and it will merge with a larger area of low pressure,” she said.

“This deep low, including remnants of Michael, is currently forecast to bring a period of unsettled weather across the British Isles next Tuesday and Wednesday.”

Although it was downgraded to a tropical storm on Thursday and is continuing to weaken, the storm is still buffeting the southeastern US with heavy rains, strong winds and possible spin-off tornados.

Michael is one of the strongest Hurricanes to make landfall on the US mainland in years. Based on it’s internal barometric pressure, Michael was the third most powerful hurricane to hit the mainland, behind the unnamed Labor Day storm of 1935 and Camille in 1969.

Based on wind speeds on landfall, Michael is the fourth strongest, behind the Labor Day storm, which had winds of 184mph, Camille and Andrew in 1992.
