Henry Hope-Frost: Campaign raises £40,000 in two days for family of beloved F1 broadcaster killed in A286 motorcycle crash

March 11, 2018

Friends of a freelance Formula 1 broadcaster and father of three who died in a motorcycle crash on the A286 have raised more than £40,000 for his family.

Henry Hope-Frost, 47, believed to have lived in Weybridge , died on Thursday (March 8) when his motorbike collided head-on with a car between Brook and Grayswood .

The popular broadcaster, known as “the voice of Goodwood”, referred to his love of motorsport as “the fever”.

In that spirit, a group of friends started a JustGiving campaign to raise £38,000 for his wife, Charlotte, and three sons – 38ºC being the temperature at which a person is considered to be suffering from a fever.

The crowdfunding page says: “Henry infected everyone around him with his ‘incurable and debilitating fever’. His words, not ours.

“His love of everything fast and loud was the fuel for a magnificent career; cars were the moving parts in his turbocharged V12 of a life.

“Truly, Henry loved anything and everything that went like the clappers when the lights went out and didn’t stop until the chequered flag fell.

“And yet, for all of that, racing was only the second most important thing in Henry’s life. His family was what always mattered the most.”

Within two days of launching the campaign, well-wishers had donated more than £39,000 for Mr Hope-Frost’s family.

At least four people made donations of £1,000. One, Julius Thurgood, founder of the Historic Racing Drivers Club, described him as “a rare and much loved man who leaves behind a noble legacy.”

The campaign accompanied an outpouring of tributes to Mr Hope-Frost on social media from motorsport fans, journalists, drivers and champions.

Former F1 champion Damon Hill tweeted: “Shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden loss of the lovely Henry Hope-Frost.

“A much loved man. Too sad.”

Another former F1 champion, Jenson Button, tweeted: “So sad that such a great man lost his live yesterday in a road accident.

“U could always tell how passionate Henry Hope-Frost was about motorsport when he interviewed you, it felt so natural like you were having a good old chinwag with ur closest mate.”
