Guildford café evacuated after gas canister explosion ‘shattered glass on kitchen door’

Customers were evacuated from a café in Guildford after a gas cannister exploded in the kitchen.

Shortly before 10am on Sunday (November 12), a fire broke out at ther Farmhouse Café at Rokers in Holly Lane.

Customers and staff were safely evacuated before firefighters tackled a small kitchen fire using a hose.

James Lowe was in the café with a friend and two small children when the fire broke out.

“We had been sat down about two minutes when we were casually told by a member of staff that we would have to leave the restaurant, there was no audible alarm in the restaurant,” he said.

“The kitchen and waiting staff were stood just outside the restaurant doors, when we got out I joked ‘who burned the toast?’.

“We were not evacuated to the car park, we were just standing outside the building with our children on a wooden bench next to the building below a window.”

He continued: “After a couple of minutes, there was a loud bang and a huge flash of flame lit up the kitchen, at this point we were asked to move to car park when the fire brigade arrived.

“The explosion was enough to shatter the glass on the internal kitchen door. Had the external windows blown, we would have all been showered in glass.

“The fire brigade were exceptional and dealt with the situation immediately.”

Get Surrey contacted the owners of the Farmhouse Cafe for a comment on Monday but is yet to receive a reply.
