Friends pay tribute to Aliny Mendes as woman with a ‘contagious smile’

Friends of Aliny Mendes, who was stabbed to death in Ewell on Friday (February 8), have spoken of her “contagious smile” and described her as the “greatest mother”.

Ms Mendes died on Friday afternoon near the junction of London Road and Sparrow Farm Road after police responded to reports a woman had been stabbed.

Ms Mendes’s friends and family have paid tribute to her, describing her as a “caring sister” with a “wonderful heart”.

Just Giving page set up to raise money to support Ms Mendes’s family has raised more than £45,000 in two days.

The incident has shocked residents living in the area, with several saying it was “devastating” to see such a violent crime happen so close to home.

Cherri Aldridge-Todman, who was friends with Ms Mendes, said the 39-year-old was someone “everyone wanted to be friends with”.

“Aliny was someone everyone wanted to be friends with,” she said. “Her smile was extremely contagious, making us smile.

“She was a person who was constantly wanting to help everyone through her church and she was the greatest mother her children could have asked for.”

She added that she hoped Ms Mendes would be “able to rest in peace back home”.

A resident of London Road who asked not to be named said this was the first incident of its type in the area since they had moved here 40 years ago.

“I’ve lived here 40 years and never seen anything like it,” they said.  “It’s not very nice, it’s very upsetting. I try to drive the other way [from the site of the incident].

“We are a very close community. It’s not something you would expect to happen.”

Another resident who asked not to be named praised the police’s handling of the aftermath of the incident.

“It’s a great shock. It’s tragic, absolutely devastating.

“The helicopter was there pretty quick and the police were fantastic. The police were really nice.”

Ricardo Godinho, 41, of Kingston Road, Epsom, has been charged with murder and will appear before Guildford Crown Court on March 15.
