Farnborough exhibition centre’s ‘significant economic benefits’ highlighted at halfway point

July 17, 2017

Bosses of an ambitious exhibition centre under construction in Farnborough have hailed the “significant economic benefits” it will bring as work reached the halfway stage.

Hall 1, a 20,000sqm event space taking shape on the site of Farnborough Airport, is now in week 35 of a 69-week build and is due to open in February 2018.

The project led by Farnborough International, organiser of the Fairnborough Airshow, is set to create the “leading events venue for the south of England outside London”.

Last week, Farnborough International bosses held a tour of the facility for representatives of the bodies that jointly funded the development of Hall 1.

The Enterprise M3 local enterprise partnership (LEP), Hampshire County Council, Rushmoor Borough Council and Barclays Bank together provided £30 million funding for the project.

Michael Watton, venue director, said: “This was a great opportunity to celebrate a unique development for Farnborough, made possible by the vision of our funding partners.”

“We are proud to secure the future of both the airshow and the ongoing events business through this innovative funding arrangement,” he said.

“Five events are already secured for Hall 1, along with the next Farnborough International Airshow, demonstrating that this venue will bring significant economic benefits to our area for years to come.”

Geoff French, chairman of the Enterprise M3 LEP board, praised the “remarkable progress made in the development of this world-class exhibition and conference centre”.

He said: “We look forward to the next Farnborough Airshow, when Hall 1 will host the world’s aviation and aerospace industry.

“It will support billions of pounds worth of trade deals and bring significant economic benefits to our area.

“We are confident that it will make Farnborough an important hub for international business events in addition to the airshow.”

Once completed, Hall 1 will boast 12,500sqm of exhibition space, conference space for up to 2,500 delegates and nine purpose-built function rooms.

Its design was developed by architects Terence O’Rourke, drawing heavily on Farnborough’s association with aerospace testing and development in its famous wind tunnels.
