An Epsom restaurant has gone from a zero hygiene rating to a five star rating in the space of six months after a major kitchen refit and dismissal of staff members.

Taste of Bengal, in Stoneleigh Broadway, was initially awarded a zero hygiene rating in August last year – the lowest possible rating from the Food Standards Agency.

The curry house required urgent improvement in food handling when preparing, cooking and storing food and was told to improve its washing facilities and pest control.

However, the FSA returned for an inspection on Tuesday (February 7) and the restaurant was awarded a five star food hygiene rating and was rated “good” across the board in hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of the restaurant and management of food safety.

Manager Ali Shahid said following the first inspection a full refit of the kitchen was carried out, which included a new floor, tiles and fridges and the restaurant was redecorated.

He said a new sink was installed and washing machine and all the staff were trained on food hazards and are now supervised by Mr Shahid.

The inspection in August concluded there was a problem with pest control but Mr Shahid said an external company came in to clean and disinfect the kitchen and there is now no issue.

The manager explained two members of staff and the chef were dismissed as they were not “carrying out instructions properly” and “not co-operating” and two new members of staff were brought in and a new chef.

“I have taken a new course to improve the oversight of the management and told to be more vigorous and check everything is being done,” Mr Shahid said.

“They [FSA] were very pleased with the improvement, they are very happy with the management and that we have been cooperating, so they awarded five stars.

“I am excited with the new rating and I will make sure we keep this rating for our customers.”
