A man in his 60s has been taken to hospital with “serious injuries” after a crash on the M25, Surrey Police said.

The crash happened at 4.14pm on Saturday (December 15) on the clockwise carriageway between Junction 8 (Reigate) and Junction 9 (Leatherhead). It caused hours of delays as three of the four lanes were closed until around 11.30pm.

One driver caught up in the delays said motorists were ignoring the lane closure signs in place, which made the congestion much worse.

Police said the crash involved a Volkswagen Passat and a BMW.

The driver of the Passat, a man in his 60s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries while the driver of the BMW, also a man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

There were also reports of a vehicle fire, according to Highways England’s Twitter account. Likewise, traffic news provider Inrix noted: “A lot of smoke was visible from the accident scene earlier.”

Police, the ambulance service and fire crews were at the scene.

Surrey Police is now appealing for witnesses following the “serious collision”.

Ann Taplin, 51, from Knaphill, said she was stuck in the traffic for more than three hours due to other drivers not following the lane closure signs and merging into the open lane late.

She said: “I was in lane four, having moved over when the signs indicated and I was practically parked for three-and-a-half hours, because drivers were using the closed lanes to overtake all the correctly positioned cars.

“This meant that they had to merge in at the actual blockage hence my major delay.

“If a lane is closed then no cars or lorries should be travelling in them. There was plenty of warning for cars to move over but only a few did while others jumped the queue.”
