A Dorking swimming teacher who has been teaching for 17 years is to shave off her hair in memory of her late brother-in-law.

Alison Betham, of Slipshatch Road, Reigate , lost her brother-in-law Richard King, of Croydon , in September this year.

The 43-year-old lost his battle with cancer after he was diagnosed in December 2016.

Raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, Alison, 43, intends to shave all her hair off at Dorking Sports Centre, where she works, in memory of Richard.

The mother-of-two said: “I think this is my way of dealing with [his death] and coming to terms with him not being around.

“I could not really help him [at the time of his death], but my sister was fantastic in helping him.

“I know there’s going to be lots of people going through something like this, so I just want to try and help.”

Alison said that Richard was with her sister Rachel King for 22 years before his death.

The two married in August this year, but sadly only had one month together before Richard died.

Alison said: “He was lovely. He could be a grumpy bugger at times, but he was absolutely lovely.”

Alison said she has never had short hair before, but is willing to shave off her hair, which is down to her back, so she can raise money for Macmillan who helped to care for Richard.

Although she said she wasn’t too nervous for the shave, Alison said she did worry about the reaction of the children from St Joseph’s School, Dorking and Charlwood School, who she teaches.

She said: “I’m not nervous about having it shaved off, but I’m more nervous about my kids when they see it.

“A few of the children have asked why I am doing it and have said I’m going to look funny.

“I’ve never had my hair short before so it’s quite a big thing for me. I do a lot of cycling as well, so maybe it will help me go faster.”

Alison has a fundraising page on Brave the Shave, which has already raised more than £500, but she has a goal of reaching £1,000.
