Dash cam captures two-car crash at notorious Esher accident blackspot

Dash cam footage has captured a two-car crash at a notorious accident blackspot in Esher.

Motorist Richard Griffiths was waiting to pull out from Esher Place Avenue at around 12.20pm on Wednesday (January 9) when his dash cam filmed the accident.

A car driving down Church Street fails to stop at the give way junction and collides with a vehicle travelling along Lammas Lane into Esher Green.

Mr Griffiths, 51, from Esher, said he has seen “countless accidents” at the same spot over the last 20 years.

He said: “Moving the war memorial was seen as part of the solution but the accidents continue on a weekly basis. It surely can’t be beyond the capability of the council to come up with a better solution?

“I realise that a major alteration to the junction is controversial, however simple changes like removing street signs and lampposts that obscure the view to the left at the Church Street junction, or a change to a stop sign instead of give way would be low cost alternatives.

“It’s only a matter of time before someone is killed and it would be a very high price for someone to pay for the apparent inaction to resolve the ongoing issues.”

Residents in Esher have long campaigned for improvements to be made at the junction following regular crashes over the years.

“Most dangerous junction in Surrey”

Last spring the war memorial was moved further back from the road in an effort to improve visibility at the junction.

In 2016 Esher councillor David Archer said there was “one crash a week” at the spot, which he labelled the “most dangerous junction in Surrey”.
