Dot Cotton herself was on hand to open this year’s festivities at The Orchard Banstead Community Christmas Event.

Village residents gathered to celebrate the start of the Christmas season on November 30 with late night shopping available and entertainment provided by lights, carol singers and even an appearance by Santa himself.

The event was formally opened by EastEnders actress and Banstead resident June Brown who is best known for her role as Dot Cotton on the BBC soap.

Local primary school children from Woodmansterne Primary School sang carols after the opening.

“All the businesses were really busy. It was a really good atmosphere, it was really lovely and it’ll get bigger next year.”

Ms Crass also added that the event, which was organised on behalf of the Banstead Business Guild, would not have been possible without the support of Banstead as a whole.

She said: “It’s the community really and all the people who were a part of it.

“Father Christmas went down on his sleigh and the lights turned on behind him so it looked like he is turning them on with his sleigh.

“There was lots of good entertainment, we had kids colouring competitions and there was all kinds of things going on throughout the evening.

“Father Christmas was on his sleigh too which was really great for the kids as well.

“This was only the second year of doing it so next year should be bigger and better.”
