More than 40,000 notices of intended prosecution have been issued to drivers caught speeding on the A3 in Surrey in the last five years – and the fastest was travelling at 132mph.

Highways England announced last month that it is planning to install speed cameras on the stretch of road near Guildford .

A Highways England “notice of determination” has raised the possibility of “A3 Guildford Speed Enforcement Cameras”.

Highways England said it is at an “early stage” of considering installing speed cameras along the A3 past Guildford to “ease congestion and smooth out traffic flow”.

But the Alliance of British Drivers has criticised the proposals by saying the money would be “better spent on making the roads safer” .

Get Surrey readers were split on whether the plans are a good idea.

A Freedom of Information request has now revealed that 42,032 notices of intended prosecution were sent out by Surrey Police after catching drivers speeding on the A3 in the last five years.

It means an average of 8,406 were sent every year, which equates to 23 speeding drivers a DAY.

“Congestion and accidents on this busy section of road are a widely acknowledged issue,” a spokesman for Highways England previously told Get Surrey .

“Average speed enforcement may help to make the road safer and reduce congestion caused by incidents and also to smooth out traffic flow.”

Surrey Police’s response to the Freedom of Information request:

We are only able to respond in relation to offences detected by camera – this includes fixed and mobile speed cameras;

2012 = 117mph – 10,254 first Notices of Intended Prosecution.

2013 = 132mph – 8,692 first Notices of Intended Prosecution.

2014 = 127mph – 10,101 first Notices of Intended Prosecution.

2015 = 121mph – 7,024 first Notices of Intended Prosecution.

2016 = 124mph – 5,961 first Notices of Intended Prosecution.
