A second traveller encampment has appeared in a town centre car park in Guildford

Surrey Police is aware of two “unauthorised” encampments in Guildford on Friday (January 11).

A group of travellers has appeared in the Millbrook Car Park, Millbrook Road, near The Weyside pub.

Another group, including 10 caravans were spotted in Bannisters Field, opposite the Tesco superstore, near the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

Surrey Police were notified of both incidents by members of the public late on Thursday evening (January 10).

Officers will continue to monitor the situation, alongside Guildford Borough Council.

A spokesman said: “Police officers attended and completed an initial site assessment and have been in contact with our partner agencies in response to the reports.

“The land which the encampments are situated upon is owned and managed by Guildford Borough Council who we have been in contact with.”

The car park and playing field remain open, according to Surrey Police.

A spokesman for Guildford Borough Council said: “We are aware of the traveller encampment at Millbrook Car Park, and are in the process of doing all we can, as quickly as possible following our unauthorised encampment process.”
